Petitions against the proposed Gauteng toll system would be heard in November, the provincial legislature said on Tuesday.
“Various organisations representing thousands of workers, communities and a political party have submitted petitions on the current tolling system within the province,” spokesperson Sithembele Tshwete said.
“The committee has decided to handle the petition as one petition and will be subjecting it to the petitions process of the Gauteng Legislature from now onwards.”
Concerns had been raised as to the affordability of the tolls as well as the lack of consultation before toll gantries were built.
Motorcyclists would pay 24 cents a kilometre, light motor vehicles 40 cents, medium vehicles R1, and “longer” vehicles R2.
Qualifying commuter taxis and buses would be exempted entirely.
Tshwete said it was hoped that through the hearing parties would begin to find a solution to the toll gate impasse.
