The arts community in South Africa always moans about the dearth of collaborations across disciplines.
But in September there was a high-profile collaboration between visual artist William Kentridge and dancer Dada Masilo, and now there is Jozi Rhythmanalogues, a film and sound project with filmmakers Theresa Collins and Mocke J van Veuren, musicians Siya Makuzeni, João Orecchia and Mngomezulu Neku, and DJs Miz Buttons and The Bartender.
The project has its genesis in a collaboration between Van Veuren and Collins last year and will take that work further. It draws on hard sciences, music and film to present a series of time-lapse movies documenting Johannesburg public spaces such as taxi ranks and libraries.
For this leg Van Veuren has generated graphs to be “read” by the musicians as musical scores to the film footage. The musicians play interpretations of these graphic scores in conversation with the film being projected.
