The Supreme Court of Appeal will hear argument on the corruption conviction of former police national commissioner Jackie Selebi in Bloemfontein this week.
Selebi was sentenced to a 15-year jail term for corruption after accepting payments from convicted drug trafficker Glenn Agliotti.
He remains free pending the appeal.
Sentencing him in the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg, Judge Meyer Joffe called Selebi “a liar” with “low moral fibre”.
Delivering judgement, Joffe said society in general and the courts in particular relied on the honesty, integrity and truthfulness of police officers.
The court held that mostly this reliance was not misplaced, but in Selebi’s case it was.
Selebi’s appeal hearing would come before the SCA on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The court granted Selebi leave to appeal in terms of whether the state had proved that Selebi had provided Agliotti with anything in return as a result of gratification received from the convicted drug trafficker.
The appeal would be before a full bench of five judges. – Sapa
