Jo’burg music picks: November 11 2011

Janet Jackson and Tori Amos in one week? Yup. It’s true.

? Janet Jackson will perform during the local leg of her Number Ones Up Close and Personal tour and has promised more deep-down emotion and less glitz. The singer said the show would consist of only her popular chart-topping hits and the focus would not be on choreography or special effects but rather on the audience members themselves. “These concerts are different from anything I have ever done. I will be as up close and personal as possible.” So, expect that special brand of distant showbiz “intimacy” that is designed to enthrall and entertain.

Teatro at Montecasino, Fourways, on November 11 and 12. Tickets between R500 to R1?500. Book at Computicket.

? The Theatre of Marcellus hosts Tori Amos this weekend. The singer’s Night of Hunters tour proved to be so popular that an extra performance date was added in Johannesburg. The inspiration behind the tour and the album of the same name is a love story starring a broken-hearted heroine.

According to her website, Amos has incorporated the sounds of classical artists, such as Chopin, into her music, promising audiences an “unequalled musical experience”. Amos has also found depth in the work of the singer-songwriter Yoav, who was born in Israel and raised in Cape Town. She first heard Yoav in 2007 when an agent slipped her his debut album. She immediately booked him to tour with her and it was not long before he was getting invitations from the likes of Imogen Heap and Katie Melua. He supports her on this tour.

Theatre of Marcellus at Emperors Palace, Kempton Park, on November 12, 13 and 14. Tickets range from R390 to R765. Book at Computicket.
