That Guy Buttery has decided to release his album To Disappear in Place on vinyl tells you something about this acoustic guitar prodigy’s philosophy of music.
Acclaimed for his finger-style acoustic instrumental songs that flow from ambient-impressionist sketches to quietly psychedelic sitar improvisations, mandolin-picked maskanda musings and pastoral tone poems, Buttery champions the tangible and the timeless. The 10-track album is a beautifully packaged B-sides successor to his award-winning Fox Hill Lane, comprising an exclusive collection of outtakes, remakes, live recordings and demos.
Highlights include Chris Letcher’s remake of various tracks as well as a demo version for the title track featuring Piers Faccini, a singer-songwriter from the United Kingdom, and guests such as KwaZulu-Natal legend Madala Kunene and Buttery’s long-time guitar hero Tony Cox. ? Soweto band Ree-Burth rode to fame on the back of the “black rock” frenzy that followed the success of the Blk Jks. The vast difference between their testosterone-fuelled post-grunge, alternative metal sound and the post-punk, progressive jazz and mbaqanga musings of the Jks show just how reductive racial pigeonholing can be.
Combining the grandiose blues-rock of Led Zeppelin and the sludgy riffs of Black Sabbath with a serious punk edge, Ree-Burth’s rock sidesteps their township roots. But Ree-burth have thus far failed to transcend their American rock roots. That looks set to change. With an updated crew that now includes Tumi Mothei on guitar and Kat Mokgele on bass, the band are looking to expand their sonic horizons. Join them when they tear up the night during an all too rare Cape Town performance. Karma Sleeps and All My Circus Friends provide the support.
