Phoneography is the term for the art of taking photographs with a cellphone.
Exactly how much of an art cellphone snapshots (or instagrams) are is a matter of debate although, in theory, the images are spontaneous, candid and devoid of elaborate pretence. Like any other populist medium that nearly everyone has access to, the notion of aesthetic elitism is swiftly shown the door. But it will be interesting to see what aspects of the old aesthetic prejudices will remain. Could a blurry, low-res smudge of a sunset really be art?
