Members of the Youth Hindu Network were among other religious groups at hearings to discuss the possible revision of public holidays.
Four complaints sparked the discussion about the revision of public holidays, the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities said on Thursday.
“Two complaints were received from Durban, one from the Free State and one from the North West province,” commission advocate Aubrey Sedupane said.
“The complaints allege unfair discrimination, the lack of recognition [accorded] to other religions, and the Basic Condition of Employment [Act] which forces people who don’t fall under the Christian religion to take leave,” Sedupane said.
Members of the Youth Hindu Network, from Newlands in Durban, wore T-shirts which said “Make Diwali a public holiday”.
Public hearings have been held in Gauteng and the Free State. – Sapa
