Phiyega took the stand this week at the Farlam commission on the killings at Marikana, but if anyone was hoping to get a clear answer on who gave the go-ahead to open fire on the striking miners at Lonmin last August, they were disappointed.
Phiyega was composed but evasive, hedging her responses and talking in circles. At one point commission chairperson Ian Farlam said Phiyega was making a “deliberate attempt not to answer a question”.
