The Mail & Guardian’s health editor, Mia Malan, walked away with this year’s Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalist of the Year award last week. The judges said her body of work “stands as an example of quality journalism made possible by print media”.
She also won in the Feature Journalist of the Year category for an article about a schizophrenic living in the Eastern Cape.
Christian Stephen was commended for his Charlie Hebdo front page.
Several other M&G journalists were runners-up in categories from presentation to multimedia and comment.
At the same time thre publication’s investigative unit, amaBhungane, won the Print Financial Journalist of the Year award at the Sanlam Awards for Excellence in Financial Journalism. The team also won in the business and companies categoy.
Business reporter Lisa Steyn was the joint winner in the Consumer Financial Education category for a story on the hidden charges in cellphone bills.
