Military operations have failed to contain Rwandan-Hutu rebels in the DRC and action is needed to restrict their financing, says a report by the UN.
Bombers detonated explosives on three trucks carrying a toxic gas amid traffic in western Iraq, killing at least two police and leaving 350 civilians needing treatment, the United States military said on Saturday. All three attacks were carried out between 4.11pm and 7.13pm local time on Friday
Iraqi insurgents killed nine more Shi’ite pilgrims on Wednesday as the toll from the previous day’s suicide attack rose to 117 amid fears that a backlash could undermine the United States-led Baghdad security plan. At least two suicide bombers detonated explosive vests on Tuesday in a crowd of Shi’ites marching through the central town of Hilla.

More than three-and-a-half years after Iraqis cheered the fall of Saddam Hussein’s statue, the ousted dictator’s own end will probably draw a little closer on Sunday with the verdict in his first trial. Baghdad was battered by a string of deadly mortar and bomb attacks on Wednesday, which killed at least 10 people as Iraq’s warring factions battled for control of a shattered country. Two court officials were killed when a their jeep exploded as it crossed a bridge leading over the Tigris River from a city centre district housing the defence and interior ministries.
