State witness Colonel Lambertus Steyn told the Pretoria high court on Monday that no one called emergency services or the police after footballer Senzo Meyiwa was shot on 26 October 2014.
During cross-examination by defence advocate Sipho Ramosepele, representing accused number two Bongani Ntanzi, Steyn said this was revealed by the analysis of the cell phone data of everyone who was in the Khumalo house in Vosloorus when the shooting happened.
“I could not find any dialled number of the emergency services, even 10111, on any phones,” Steyn said.
First state witness Zandile Khumalo, Meyiwa’s girlfriend Kelly Khumalo, Meyiwa’s friends Tumelo Madlala and Mthokozisi Thwala, Zandile’s boyfriend Longwe Twala, and owner of the house, Gladness Khumalo, were present when Meyiwa shot dead in what the state believes is a botched robbery.
Ntanzi denied knowing and being in contact with any of the other accused.
This comes after Steyn told the court on Friday that calls were made between Ntanzi and accused number five, Fisokuhle Ntuli, who had called Kelly Khumalo on two occasions.
On Monday, Ntanzi said the number Steyn was talking about was his but that he last
used the number in 2019.
The trial started again from scratch last week, with a new judge, Ratha Mokgoatlheng, who replaced Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela, who was suspended for misconduct after failing to deliver judgments within a reasonable period.
The five people on trial — Ntuli, Ntanzi, Mthokozisi Maphisa, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya and Mthobisi Ncube — have pleaded not guilty to charges of premeditated murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, illegal possession of a firearm and the illegal possession of ammunition.
