A warrant of arrest has been issued for television presenter and musician Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye after he failed to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court today.
Maarohanye was due back in court in connection with a case arising from an alleged confrontation with an e-hailing driver in Edenvale on 14 June. The matter had previously been postponed to 24 August for further investigations.
His legal defence told the court that Maarohanye had been booked off sick since 20 August. He reportedly has a medical report supporting his absence.
The court issued the warrant following his failure to attend but ordered that it should not be activated until 7 September, when the matter is due back in court.
Maarohanye is out on R5 000 bail. The current charges are discharging a firearm in a public place and pointing an object likely to cause a person to believe it was a firearm.
The case stems from an alleged incident involving an e-hailing driver who had dropped a woman off at a residence in Edenvale. Police allege that Maarohanye confronted the driver after accusing him of having a romantic relationship with his girlfriend.
According to the allegations, the confrontation escalated and the driver was allegedly forced into Maarohanye’s vehicle and prevented from leaving. Police further allege that a firearm was discharged in the direction of the driver. The driver escaped unharmed and reported the incident at a nearby police station.
Maarohanye has denied the allegations and described the case as fabricated. His lawyer has also disputed aspects of the State’s version of events, including claims concerning a pellet gun reportedly recovered from his home.
Following his arrest in June, Maarohanye approached the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg on an urgent basis. The court granted his application on 16 June and ordered his release on R5 000 bail.
The allegations against Maarohanye have not been proven in court. He remains an accused person and the criminal proceedings are ongoing.
