Wenger starts title countdown

Arsene Wenger is already counting down the days until the end of the season as Arsenal try to hold onto their position on top of the Premier League. Wenger’s side lead Manchester United by one point and the Gunners boss knows that the last four teams to be in pole position on Christmas Day went on to win the title.

Egypt tower block collapse toll rises to eight

Rescue workers pulled three more bodies from the rubble of a collapsed block of flats in the Egyptian city of Alexandria overnight, bringing the toll to eight dead with many still missing, a security source said on Tuesday. Emergency services continued their search following Monday’s collapse of the 12-storey building.

French family of five shot in Mauritania

Gunmen shot dead four members of a French family on Monday, including at least two children, and badly wounded the father in south-west Mauritania, the French embassy in Nouakchott said. The attack happened at Aleg, 250km east of the capital, a security source said, adding that the gunmen were unidentified.

Buffels River bursts its banks

The Buffels River at Laingsburg has burst its banks after heavy thunderstorms in parts of the Western Cape Karoo on Monday night, the South African Broadcasting Corporation reported on Tuesday. The report said floodwaters rose over the N1 bridge, which had to be closed for short periods during the night.

Kenyan police fired teargas to disperse stone-throwing supporters of the country’s main presidential contenders on Monday after the candidates made a final push to win votes in a race deemed too close to call. Scuffles briefly flared shortly after President Mwai Kibaki and his opposition challenger, Raila Odinga, addressed huge rallies in the capital.
