A British student swallowed his door key to prevent friends from forcing him to go home because he was drunk, reports said on Wednesday. Chris Foster, studying computer design at Bournemouth University in southern England, had drunk six beers as well as vodka and whisky when his friends decided he should go home and sleep it off.

Ekurhuleni metro police head Robert McBride was awarded R200 000 of the R3,6-million damages claim he lodged against the Citizen in the Johannesburg High Court on Wednesday. The case concerned mainly editorial comment by acting editor Martin Williams and opinion in a column by freelancer Andrew Kenny in September and October 2003.

The guru to the Beatles who introduced transcendental meditation to the West, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, died at his Dutch home on February 5, aides said on February 6. He was said to be 91. The reclusive Indian mystic shot to international prominence when the Beatles visited him in the foothills of the Himalayas in 1968 to learn his meditation techniques.

Results of the latest MasterCard Worldwide Index of Consumer Confidence for the first half of 2008 show that consumer confidence in South Africa remains optimistic, despite a minor decrease from last year. Out of a possible score of 100, the South African index score decreased from 86,5 for the first half of 2007 to 83,7, it said in a statement on Wednesday.

Veterans of Zimbabwe’s liberation war warned a former ally of President Robert Mugabe who will run against him in next month’s elections that he was a traitor, government newspapers reported on Wednesday. Former finance minister Simba Makoni, a senior member of the ruling Zanu-PF, entered the presidential race on Tuesday.

The power-supply crisis and looming fresh-water shortage are early warning signs that South Africa needs to curb use of natural resources, global wildlife fund WWF said on Wednesday. ”South Africa has a narrowing time window in which to act decisively to prevent critical resource shortages,” said South African WWF chief executive Dr Morné du Plessis.

The cash-strapped Australian Rugby Union said on Wednesday it was shocked at a government decision to scrap funding for a national rugby academy in Queensland state. Former prime minister John Howard committed Aus-million to the project last June but the new Labour government of Kevin Rudd said it was now being axed under a cost-cutting programme.
