A voluntary recall of Chinese-made Bindeez toy beads has been extended to South Africa, a media report said on Friday. Certain batches of the beads, which stick together when exposed to water, are coated with a chemical which, when ingested, metabolises into the date-rape drug gamma-hydroxybutyrate.

Corpses were scattered on Mogadishu streets on Friday after overnight fighting between Somali insurgents and Ethiopian troops that killed 12 people. The bodies of the dead could be seen in the city’s northern Sqa Holaha neighbourhood, where insurgents dragged dead Ethiopians through the streets on Thursday.

Poachers have shot dead three black rhinoceroses — a species listed as the most highly endangered large mammal — on a private conservancy in Zimbabwe. Owner John Travers said poachers armed with AK47 rifles on Wednesday night evaded the armed guards surrounding the rhino at the Imire game park.
