A veil of silence has been drawn over allegations that National Intelligence Agency boss Manala Manzini abused his wife. The Mail & Guardian reported last week that the ANC Women’s League was planning to discuss the issue with Manzini’s wife, Mavivi Mayakayaka-Manzini, deputy chairperson of the league, at a national working committee meeting.

Western Cape police commissioner Mzwandile Petros has accused Cape Town mayor Helen Zille of ”not telling the truth” when she claimed that the Cape Town city council employed private investigators because the police had failed to probe controversial councillor Badih Chaaban. Said Petros in an interview: ”I called a press conference and played recorded evidence to show that the council employed the private investigating firm.”

I recently had the pleasure of spending a mid-week getaway at one of the Western Cape’s finest hotel/spa complexes. The Arabela Hotel and Spa, about an hour from Cape Town near Gansbaai, boasts fynbos-fringed fairways leading to a golf-course clubhouse with views of the Bot River lagoon and the Kogelberg mountains, writes Zodidi Mhlana.

"At last, we are now on the freeway!" said my driver, exhaling proudly, adjusting his sunglasses and revving our white Hyundai hatchback to a recklessly exhilarating 80kph. I allowed myself a little smirk at the liberal use of the term "freeway" — a bold Americanism that appeared to be over-selling the rather rudimentary stretch of road ahead of us.

In mid-winter I boarded a 55ft (5m) sailing yacht out of Cape Town’s Table Bay to rediscover islands and what they can teach us about coping with climate change. Two commuters and a taxi driver were injured when they were caught in the crossfire of a taxi-violence shoot-out in Edenvale on Thursday. Ekurhuleni metro police spokesperson Inspector Jimmy Maboko said between 100 and 150 members of the Germiston Taxi Association and the Tembisa Taxi Association had gathered and began shooting at each other.

Paul Tibbets, the pilot and commander of the B-29 that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, died on November 1, a spokesperson said. He was 92. Tibbets died at his Columbus home after a two-month decline in his health stemming from a variety of health problems, said Gerry Newhouse, a long-time friend.

President Thabo Mbeki has ignored all written parliamentary questions addressed to him by the official opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Thursday. DA parliamentary leader Sandra Botha said Mbeki had not responded to all nine questions that the party had addressed to him this year.

London’s police force was found guilty on Thursday of putting the public at risk over the killing of an innocent Brazilian that police mistook for a suicide bomber in 2005. Police shot electrician Jean Charles de Menezes (27) seven times in the head after he boarded an underground train in south London on July 22 2005.
