United States forces killed 49 ”criminals” in fierce fighting with militants in Baghdad’s Shi’ite stronghold of Sadr City on Sunday during a raid targeting an Iranian-linked insurgent. Medics at four hospitals confirmed 17 dead, including a boy and a girl, but US military spokesperson Major Winfield Danielson said there were no civilian casualties and no reports of American losses.

Democratic Republic of Congo’s army on Sunday gave pro-government militia fighters 48 hours to disarm or face military action as thousands more people fled renewed fighting in the eastern province of North Kivu. Explosions and gunfire rang out before dawn in the hills around Rugari, a town of tin-roofed houses near the Rwandan and Ugandan borders.

Kurdish rebels killed at least 12 Turkish soldiers and wounded 16 others in an ambush on Sunday, prompting Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan to call crisis talks to consider a military strike against rebel bases in Iraq. The attack came four days after Turkey’s Parliament approved a motion to allow troops to enter northern Iraq.

Ethiopia’s Ogaden National Liberation Front rebels said they killed 140 government soldiers in a weekend assault targeting a senior official, a statement Ethiopia immediately denounced as false. Both sides routinely claim to inflict large numbers of casualties on the other, but the reports are difficult to independently verify.

There’s a kind of madness abroad in the country when a newspaper editor faces arrest for the possession of documents. The police have now denied they intend to arrest anybody from the Sunday Times, but it is clear they are tackling the disappearance of the medical files of the health minister with a seriousness that is out of all proportion to the crime.

Five men were arrested on Sunday in connection with the murder of reggae star Lucky Dube, East Rand police said. Police arrested the five, aged between 31 and 35, in Spruitview on the East Rand on Sunday morning. Police spokesperson Superintendent Eugene Opperman said police seized two stolen handguns and a VW Polo.

Around 50 people have been killed in three days of tribal clashes in the western Sudanese region of Kordofan, government officials were quoted as saying on Sunday. Dozens were wounded in the fighting sparked by the killing of one person in a land dispute.
