Security measures will be tightened in shopping centres across the country, Business against Crime (BAC) said in Johannesburg on Thursday. Addressing a media conference in Illovo, BAC’s Jenni Irish-Qhobosheane said the prevalence of violent crimes in shopping centres was of serious concern for the government, the business sector and law-abiding citizens.

South Africa is being used as a destination and transit point, as well as a source, for human trafficking, the International Association of Women Judges was told at a conference in Boksburg on Thursday. Public prosecutions director advocate Thoko Majokweni said: ”Malawian women are sold by Nigerian syndicates … to Germany, Italy and Belgium, and this all happens via South Africa.”

Former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto ended eight years of self-exile on Thursday, returning to Karachi where more than 200Â 000 supporters poured on to the streets to welcome her home. ”I am thankful to God, I am very happy that I’m back in my country and I was dreaming of this day,” said Bhutto.

Environmental NGO Earthlife Africa has threatened a legal challenge to what it says is South Africa’s ”hasty and ill-informed” draft nuclear policy. The threat was made in a submission on Earthlife’s behalf by the Legal Resources Centre on the policy document, released by the Department of Minerals and Energy in August.

The two sides in Sudan’s national coalition meet on Thursday to try to salvage their fragile peace deal after disenchanted former southern rebels walked out of the government. President Omar Hassan al-Bashir will meet First Vice-President Salva Kiir, chairperson of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, in Khartoum.

The European Union has given a cautious welcome to the outcome of a summit of three big developing countries. The leaders of Brazil, India and South Africa on Wednesday reaffirmed their commitment to seeking a deal in the long-delayed World Trade Organisation’s (WTO) Doha round of global free-trade talks that was ”fair and acceptable to all”.

A South African businessman appeared in a Zimbabwean court to face charges of attempting to smuggle three rifles and 108 rounds of ammunition, a state-run daily reported on Thursday. McCallum Douglas Wayne was arrested at Harare International Airport after he was found with the firearms and ammunition without a certificate, the Herald reported.
