The United States fears that attacks in Darfur and an impasse in implementation of a peace agreement in southern Sudan threaten peace efforts throughout the embattled North African country. The rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement accused the central government on Thursday of failing to abide by the peace agreement.

At least 45 people have died in the poverty-stricken island of Haiti as homes were swept away in floods triggered by heavy rain, the Interior Ministry said Friday. Interior Minister Paul Antoine Bien-Aime said 23 bodies had been found on Thursday in Cabaret, just north of the capital, and 12 were missing.

Two men who sent millions of unsolicited pornographic emails have been sentenced to more than five years in federal prison as part of the first prosecution under a federal anti-spam law, United States Department of Justice officials said. Prosecutors said that the two men started their spamming business four years ago.

An amnesty signed into law by President Pervez Musharraf last week could yet be overturned at a hearing three weeks from now.

Two men who were found guilty of 21 charges against them — including seven counts of murder and six counts of rape — were sentenced to 445 years’ imprisonment each by the Middelburg High Court, Mpumalanga police said on Friday. The court found the men guilty on October 2 after a two-year trial.
