Liberia’s president-elect Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf said on Friday she’s deliberating on what should be done about former warlord Charles Taylor, who is in exile in Nigeria but wanted in Sierra Leone on war-crimes charges. Nigeria granted Taylor asylum in 2003 in part to help end Liberia’s own 1989-2003 armed struggle.

A leap second will be inserted in the world’s clocks just before midnight — Greenwich mean time — on New Year’s Eve, the United States Naval Observatory reported on Friday. Norman Vaughan, who as a young man explored Antarctica and spent much of his life seeking adventure, died on Friday just a few days after turning 100 years old. Vaughan died at about 10.30am local time at Providence Alaska medical centre surrounded by family and friends, said nursing supervisor Martha George.

A Manhattan man’s holiday spirits soared to celestial heights on Friday when a judge gave him permission to change his name to Jesus Christ. Jose Luis Espinal (42) said he was ”happy” and ”grateful” that the judge approved the change, effective immediately.
