The recurring spillage of sewage into the Vaal River is a result of the over-utilisation of outdated infrastructure, the Emfuleni municipality said on Tuesday. It was reacting to a report in a Johannesburg daily newspaper that three environmental organisations are threatening legal action.

A nurse facing murder and manslaughter charges went on trial on Tuesday over the deaths of 29 patients in what has been described as the biggest series of killings in Germany since the end of World War II. Stephan Letter (27) could face life in prison if the Bavarian state court in Kempten convicts him on 16 counts of murder, 12 of manslaughter and one of mercy killing.

Israel on Tuesday vowed to continue its policy of targeting Palestinian militants after the air force conducted a third deadly strike on the Gaza Strip in less than three days. Seven Palestinian militants have been killed in a series of air strikes since Sunday, sparked by rocket attacks on Israel.

Australian airline Jetstar on Tuesday refused to back down over an incident on a flight in Queensland in which a mother-of-two was ordered by cabin crew to cover up a tattoo on her shoulder blade depicting a naked couple engaging in sex. Flight attendants on the January 26 flight obliged Peta Bull (36) to wear a jacket until she was off the domestic flight and in the Brisbane airport terminal.

At least 12 people have died in the past two weeks from an outbreak of meningitis in drought-stricken northern Kenya, officials said on Tuesday, warning of an epidemic of the fatal disease. Kenya’s health ministry reported 57 cases of meningitis, 12 of them fatal, since late January.
