Poor Jacob Zuma. With his political fortunes on the turn, the ANC deputy president must be casting an anxious eye to his professional future. He is soon to crash up against what could well turn out to be the cold, indifferent edifice of common law. In the meantime, all Mr Zuma has had to reassure him that his day in court will be conducted in a style befitting his dignity.

Pay no attention

The African National Congress Youth League says it is ”disgusted at the lies perpetuated by SABC radio” after a report aired claiming that ANCYL president Fikile ”Zuma 100% With An Option For 56% Depending On How The Trials Go” Beebopaloola has been barred from speaking at the South African Students Congress conference in Limpopo at the weekend.

Experts ponder implications following Egypt election

Last week saw the end of the third and final round of Egypt’s tense parliamentary elections, during which 12 people were killed amid attempts by state security to prevent voters from casting ballots. Despite widespread reports of vote-rigging, the banned, but tolerated, Muslim Brotherhood Islamic organisation won 88 out of the 444 elected seats.

World Bank provides $20m boost to fight malaria

The Zambian government has signed a -million loan agreement with the World Bank to fund a five-year booster project to combat malaria, which kills 50 000 of its people every year and causes 40% of infant deaths. After signing the agreement, acting Finance and National Planning Minister Felix Mutati said the money will free more funds for development programmes.

Angry Khutsong residents burn houses

Two houses were set on fire on Wednesday during protests in Khutsong outside Carletonville as thousands of residents protested the proposed incorporation of Merafong municipality into North West from Gauteng. They took to the streets in a mobilisation march after a clash with the police.

Ramon resigns from Johnnic

Christine Ramon has resigned from her position as chief executive of gaming and entertainment group Johnnic Holdings Limited. "It is with great sadness that I have taken this decision, but with the change in effective control of Johnnic, I believe it is appropriate," she said.
