Chiefs keep title race alive

Kaizer Chiefs’ championship hopes were given a much-needed boost when they delivered a clinical 1-0 victory over Premier Soccer League log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday night.

Sundowns, who were looking to consolidate their grip at the top of the table, became their own worst enemy as they failed to make good use of their opportunities.

On the other hand, Chiefs opted to absorb the pressure in the opening exchanges, giving themselves enough time to analyse their opposition.

The winner came unexpectedly through a Chiefs counter-attack when David Radebe was abruptly hacked down by Vuyo Mere in the penalty area.

David Obua calmly converted in the 26th minute, sending Sundowns goalkeeper Rafael Dudamel the wrong way.

Chiefs played like the champions they are and gradually gained a tactical dominance as the game wore on.

With a resolute no-nonsense defence that strangled the life out of every threatening Sundowns attack, Chiefs were able to unleash their speedy midfield, ably marshalled by Arthur Zwane.

In their titanic dominant mood, Chiefs, however, failed to gain a psychological edge over Sundowns in the dying moments, with Sundowns striker Surprise Moriri acting as goalkeeper after Dudamel got injured and the visitors had used up their quota of substitutions.

Chiefs’ arrogance almost cost them dearly in injury time when Sandile Ndlovu’s goal was disallowed after the lanky Sundowns striker marginally straddled offside.

In the end, though, Chiefs just had enough energy and savvy to outplay and out-think a Sundowns side who stand between them and winning the championship for a record-equalling third time.

However, Sundowns side could turn the tide against Chiefs when they meet again at Loftus next week Wednesday. — Sapa
