British govt publicises gay ‘marriage’ rights

Britain’s government was on Wednesday launching a campaign to publicise its new ”gay marriage” law, which will give same-sex couples many of the same rights as married people. The first such partnerships will be sealed just before Christmas, with pop singer Elton John and his partner set to become one of the first ”married” gay couples.

A bloody day in Baghdad

More than a dozen explosions ripped through the Iraqi capital on Wednesday, killing at least 152 people and wounding 542 in a deadly series of attacks that began with a huge suicide car bombing that targeted labourers assembled to find work for the day. Al-Qaeda in Iraq claimed responsibility.

Bank robber captured on return to rent home

Portugal’s biggest bank robber yet, on the run since escaping prison in March, has been recaptured by police after he returned to the country to rent a home, police and reports said on Tuesday. Manuel Simoes netted more than €500 000 (R3,91-million) in 29 bank robberies carried out between 1998 and 2000.

Croatian zoo opens cages for humans

Visitors to Croatia’s Zagreb zoo can now experience what it feels like to be a caged animal, zoo management announced on Tuesday. People will be able to walk through two cages and feel what it’s like to be held in captivity, as well as learn why humans are "the most dangerous species on the planet".

ID MPs jump ship to ANC

The Independent Democrats suffered a setback on Wednesday with the defection of two of its seven MPs, Cecil Burgess and Chris Wang, to the African National Congress. Western Cape MPL Mzwandile Manjiya also defected to the ANC along with Burgess and Wang.

Fear of crime ‘linked to poor service delivery’

Crime levels in South Africa are decreasing but negative perceptions on crime have doubled since 1994, a conference on prison overcrowding heard on Wednesday. ”Crime in general has come down between 1994 and 2004. The public perception is contrary to that,” said Anton du Plessis, head of the crime and justice programme at the Institute for Security Studies.

PetroSA posts pre-tax profit of R1,8bn

South Africa’s state-owned oil and gas entity, PetroSA, has posted a pre-tax profit of R1,8-billion for the financial year ended March 31 2005, a substantial improvement on the R240-million recorded in 2004, on the back of record high international oil prices, a firmer rand and strict cost containment.
