South Africa all-rounder Andrew Hall will play for Kent in the 2005 season, the English county announced on Tuesday. Hall (29) was released by Kent’s domestic rivals Worcestershire after two seasons with the Midlands county and he lost his place in the South Africa team towards the end of their tour of England last season.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) on Wednesday announced that the Coca-Cola Cup final between Kaizer Chiefs and Supersport United will take place at Vodacom Park in Bloemfontein on December 18, starting at 8pm. Chiefs qualified for the final after beating Moroka Swallows in the semifinal in Pretoria on Saturday.

South African glamour club Kaizer Chiefs return to the African Champions League next year after a lengthy absence. The only previous appearance by the Johannesburg team was 11 years ago when they lost on the away-goal rule in the second round to eventual winners Zamalek of Egypt.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) stands by its assertion that the tripartite alliance is not functioning properly, despite the African National Congress’s claims to the contrary. Cosatu on Tuesday said ”the alliance has not functioned in the manner envisaged in the Cosatu national congress resolution”.

Mozambican electoral officials on Tuesday blamed heavy rain, muddy roads and spoilt ballot papers for the delay in counting the vote from last week’s presidential and parliamentary elections. The main opposition Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama has accused the National Electoral Commission of trying to fix the vote.

The African Union agreed on Tuesday on a -million budget for 2005, a fourfold increase, in order to finance a series of ambitious projects. In the budget, -million is earmarked for peace and security — less than half the -million sought for this by the AU Commission.

But this year’s winner, Austrian Elfriede Jelinek, is absent from the annual festivities. Jelinek maintained from the day she won the prize that she had no plans to attend the award ceremony on Friday.
