Mighty Maulers settle for a point

Manning Rangers travelled all the way from Durban hoping for a win and three points against Wits University at Milpark Stadium on Wednesday night. But the Mighty Maulers had to settle for a point after their one-all draw. Wits remain eighth on the table. It was their eighth draw from 13 games.

SA trounced in water-polo final

The women’s international water-polo tournament held at the Joan Harrison complex, East London, came to an end on Wednesday night with Russia unsurprisingly taking first place. They beat South Africa 21-1 in the final, in a game whose fate was sealed by the end of the first quarter.

‘A victory for Mike Tyson’

Mike Tyson closed the book on Wednesday on one of his many run-ins with the law: his brawl last year with two men outside a Brooklyn hotel. Wearing a pink button-down shirt, leather jacket and cap pulled low over his eyes, Tyson made his way through a clump of photographers and the occasional fan to a downtown Brooklyn courtroom.

Dolphins the winners after rainy match

Rain delayed the start of the Western Province-Boland innings for close on three hours against the home side KwaZulu-Natal Dolphins in their Standard Bank Cup cricket match at the Sahara Stadium, Kingsmead, in Durban on Wednesday. It eventually went down to the Duckworth-Lewis method of decision.

Sudan agrees to stop Darfur offensive

The Sudanese government has agreed to stop a military offensive in Darfur province in a move that could prompt the two main rebel groups to end their boycott of African Union-sponsored peace talks, the chief AU mediator said on Wednesday. The rebel groups on Monday walked out of the latest bid in Abuja to resolve the Darfur conflict.

What Danes do at Christmas time

Sales in Denmark of the anti-impotence drug Viagra and similar products are predicted to soar during the festive season, according to sex advisers and drug company spokespersons. In 2003, sales of such drugs increased 17% in December on the November figures, the group Danish Drug Information was quoted as saying in a newspaper.

Mozambique’s ruling party and its presidential candidate, Armando Guebuza, have secured a landslide victory in polls to choose a successor to veteran leader Joaquim Chissano amid opposition outrage and demands for new elections. Opposition party Renamo and 20 smaller parties on Tuesday demanded fresh elections.
