Ireland’s Bell of the Ball out of Cup

Ireland centre Jonny Bell on Monday was forced to pull out of next month’s Rugby World Cup with an Achilles tendon injury. The 29-year-old Ulsterman’s career has been beset with problems since his first cap in Australia in 1994, with this latest setback occurring during a training session.

Pakistan hopes SA tour can go ahead

Pakistan cricket officials have voiced hope that South Africa would reschedule their cricket tour called off over security fears in Karachi last week. A meeting of the South African Cricket management committee has been called to discuss a revised Pakistan tour schedule that scraps matches in Karachi and Peshawar.

How TB can help fight Aids

As the government works out how to provide anti-retrovirals (ARVs) to people infected with HIV/Aids, health professionals are putting forward a strong case for combining HIV programmes and those dealing with tuberculosis (TB). In South Africa more than half of all TB patients are also infected with HIV/Aids.

‘This school is a sinking ship’

Pupils are held up at gun point during their lunch break at school. A girl has a broken bottle held to her throat in the corridor. Pupils cannot flush toilets because the ablution facilities are so blocked that the floor is already covered in an inch of sewage. This is the daily reality for pupils at Johannesburg Secondary School in Mayfair.

Mbeki finds his voice

President Thabo Mbeki offered his condolences to Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe on Monday following the death of that country’s vice-president, Simon Muzenda. Muzanda passed away on Saturday following a long illness.
