US forces tighten grip on Iraq city

United States soldiers tightened their cordon around al-Qaeda fighters holed up in the Iraqi city of Baquba on Saturday, advancing carefully through streets lined with roadside bombs and booby-trapped houses. ”We are enveloping the enemy into a kill sack,” said Command Sergeant Major Jeff Huggins.

Car bomb kills 25 in Iraqi marketplace

A car bomb killed 25 people and wounded 45 on Saturday evening when it exploded in the middle of a village market near Baquba, north of Baghdad, local police said. The attack in the Shi’ite village of Huwaider, about 60km north of the capital, came minutes before the start of evening prayers at the nearby mosque.

Car bomb kills 10 in Kirkuk

A suicide car bomb ripped through the Iraqi national guard headquarters in Kirkuk on Saturday, killing 10 people in the second major attack on the northern city this month. Also, nine people were wounded when a mortar shell struck a crowd of students and parents awaiting exam results in front of a school in the Iraqi city of Baquba.

Carnage after massive Iraq blast

At least 68 people were killed and scores wounded on Wednesday when a suicide bomber blew up a car outside a police station in Baquba, northeast of Baghdad, police and the Interior Ministry said. The power of the bomber’s deadly charge fired flesh and shrapnel on to neighbouring rooftops.

Dark day in Iraq: 66 killed

Insurgents, some believed linked with terror suspect Abu Mussab al-Zarqawi, unleashed attacks on Thursday on four cities across Iraq leaving more than 66 dead and 268 wounded in an apparently coordinated onslaught. The heaviest death toll of Thursday morning’s violence was in Baquba, northeast of the capital, where at least 20 Iraqis and two US soldiers were killed.
