Weekend to confirm Vodacom Cup contenders

The final eight teams that will vie for the R1-million prize for winning the 2008 Vodacom Cup will be confirmed after this weekend’s final round of league matches. Though Griquas and Western Province are certain of their places in the quarterfinals, at least eight teams remain in contention for the six remaining play-off spots.

Fit Boks included in Bulls line-up

The Bulls have included three of their previously injured World Cup Springboks in the side to play the Lions in a warm-up match in Windhoek on Saturday. Danie Rossouw, Gurthro Steenkamp and Akon Ndungane have all been given the green light, and the starting line-up is arguably the best Frans Ludeke could have selected.

Stormers notch up runaway victory

The Stormers scored a runaway victory of 72-10 in their warm-up match against the Boland Cavaliers at Wellington on Saturday after leading 24-0 at half-time. The Stormers scored 12 tries, of which six were converted. It was a typical pre-season match with plenty of mistakes on both sides.

Lions set up semifinal clash against the Sharks

Seven tries in the first half and a score of 47-0 at the break against the Boland Cavaliers on Saturday ensured the Golden Lions of third place on the Absa Currie Cup log after the last round of the season. The Lions’ comprehensive win of 75-0 will see them play the Sharks in Durban next Saturday in the first of the Currie Cup semifinals.

Elephants trample Eagles in George

In a shock result in a Currie Cup first-division game at Outeniqua Park in George on Saturday, the Eastern Province Mighty Elephants sprang a surprise when they defeated the Eagles 34-17. In Wellington, Griquas beat the Boland Cavaliers 57-22, and the Lions outplayed the Valke 61-30 in Johannesburg.

Sharks too strong for Boland

The Sharks scored seven tries in a well-deserved victory of 48-25 against the Boland Cavaliers in Durban after leading 22-13 at half-time on Friday. The Sharks were dominant throughout and Gcobani Bobo looked dangerous on attack. For the home side, scrumhalf Rory Kockott was once again a handful and he tested Boland’s defence to the full.
