Needing all the help they can get on the evidence of their insipid 2-0 defeat against Nigeria on the weekend, Bafana Bafana were on Monday urgently seeking to rehabilitate their walking wounded before the vital second African Nations Cup qualifier against Equatorial Guinea at the Super Stadium on Saturday.

Bafana stumble against Nigeria

New Bafana Bafana coach Joel Santana now knows how hard he will have to work to earn his massive R1,5-million monthly salary and build a competitive team for the 2010 World Cup finals after his first game in charge ended in disappointing 2-0 defeat by Nigeria in the opening 2010 African Nations Cup Group Four qualifier on Sunday.

Bafana are ready, says Pitso

Now is the time for budding Bafana Bafana stars to stand up and be counted as South Africa take on Nigeria in a tough 2010 African Nations Cup qualifier in Abuja on Sunday. Kick-off is at 5pm South African time. There is no Benni McCarthy, and three midfield aces in Teko Modise, Delron Buckley and Lerato Chabangu are all nursing an assortment of injuries.

Matola hands Bafana the match

A pedestrian Bafana Bafana outfit needed an own goal to beat Zimbabwe 2-1 in a friendly international match at the Germiston Stadium on Tuesday evening. Gilbert Mushangazhike struck first for the visitors in the 12th minute. Sthembiso Ngcobo equalised in the 73rd minute and his feeble shot at goal deflected off James Matola late in extra time to give the hosts an unforeseen victory.

Perhaps there are some positives for Bafana

Although his new side failed to make it past round one at the Africa Cup of Nations, Carlos Alberto Parreira won’t be entirely depressed. Bafana’s performance at the tournament in Egypt in 2006 was marked by a medley of administrative foibles, disruptive player mutinies, pre-tournament shenanigans and sepulchral lethargy that showed on the field when they failed to score.

South Africa have ditched star striker Benni McCarthy for the 2008 African Nations Cup in Ghana. Brazilian coach Carlos Alberto Parreira also dumped first-choice defender Bradley Carnell and midfielders Delron Buckley and Macbeth Sibaya from a 23-man squad named on Friday.

Bafana thrash Lesotho in training match

A makeshift Bafana Bafana side put five goals past a hapless Lesotho in a one-sided training match at the Germiston Stadium on Tuesday evening. Ajax Cape Town striker Thembinkosi Fanteni led the way with a brace, while Orlando Pirates’ Lebohang Mokoena, Santos’ Thando Mngomeni and SuperSport United’s Katlego Mphela netted a goal each.

Modise nets twice against Canada

Teko Modise netted twice to give Bafana Bafana a 2-0 win in an international friendly against Canada at the Absa Stadium in Durban on Tuesday. The Orlando Pirates playmaker netted a splendid goal from 20m in the 39th minute and got his second on the stroke of halftime with a well-taken penalty.

Ajax scrape home against Cosmos

Ajax Cape Town’s Brazilian defender Edwardo Ferreira scored the lone goal in his side’s victory over Jomo Cosmos in a Premier Soccer League game at Newlands on Sunday. Ferreira was also a tower of strength in the Ajax defence, working well with Clayton Jagers, Bryce Moon and Brett Evans.
