Dolphins take control against Warriors

The Dolphins have taken a stranglehold on the second day of the Supersport cricket match against the Warriors at Mercedes-Benz Park. By close of play on Friday, the home team were struggling on 84 for three wickets, still 428 runs behind the Dolphins’ mammoth 512 for seven wickets declared.

E Cape premier fires youth commissioners

Eastern Cape Premier Nosimo Balindlela has sacked provincial youth commission chairperson Mlungisi Lumka and youth commissioner Nonkuselo Nkayitshana, her office said on Monday. The working relationship with the commissioners had ”irretrievably broken down” after the publication of articles and advertisements by the commission.

Spears put up good fight in going down

Showing vast improvement, the Southern Spears gave the Cats a good go for their money in going down 29-11 in their Super 14 warm-up match at the Absa Stadium on Saturday. The match was watched by a large, appreciative crowd dressed in red, but the weather was sultry enough to make even the skinniest person sweat.

SA schoolboy one short of a tonne

Dean Elgar of Free State was unfortunate to just miss a well-deserved century by one run when he scored 99 against Border at Fort Hare University, Alice, on Saturday on the second day of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week. Elgar made his runs off 154 balls with eight fours and Free State totalled 192-6 in their 50 overs.

In an exciting finish, the Nashua Dolphins beat the Mercedes Warriors by three wickets with five balls to spare in a Standard Bank Cup cricket match at Mercedes-Benz Park in East London on Monday. Everything seemed to be going the Warriors’ way until the advent of Dolphins skipper Lance Klusener.

‘Mr Softball’ devoted his life to the game

If anyone in South Africa deserved the sobriquet ”Mr Softball”, it was Phillipus ”Phillip” Petrus Kahts, who died recently in Cape Town at the age of 62. The past 46 years of Kahts’s life were devoted to the game. Among other achievements, he successfully bid for the men’s fast-pitch Softball World Cup to be held in South Africa in 2000.

The Free State Cheetahs held off a determined Border Bulldogs XV to win their Currie Cup match 18-12 at the Absa Stadium. In other matches, the Mighty Elephants beat the Falcons and the Blue Bulls maintained their stronghold in the Currie Cup competition at home ground Loftus by beating the Boland Kavaliers.

Bulk carrier still stuck off Eastern Cape

Attempts to refloat the stranded log-carrier Kiperousa failed on Thursday, but the operation will be tried again on Friday evening, the South African Maritime Safety Authority said. Spokesperson Captain Peter Kroon said on Friday that the cable between the tug and the ship came undone on the first pull on Thursday evening.

Ship ‘sinking’ off East London

A bulk carrier ship carrying a consignment of logs from West Africa was sinking off the coast of East London on Tuesday afternoon. The National Port Authority’s East London spokesperson, Terry Taylor, said they had received a call on Tuesday that the 180m Kiperousa was taking on water in her engine room.

Large crowd attacks police during arrest

Police used stun grenades and rubber bullets to control about 1 000 residents at Diviwe township in Komga who tried to prevent the arrest of a man for assault on Sunday. The Komga police had to call for back-up as the mob stoned and attacked them in order to prevent them from leaving with the suspect.
