Bedlam erupted in the Kempton Park Regional Court on Thursday when three men accused of possession of illegal firearms staged a dramatic escape. The escape took place when the three suspects were taken to the court’s holding cells, presiding magistrate Eric Mhlari told the Mail & Guardian Online on Friday.

A ferry boat carrying more than 70 people capsized on Roodeplaat Dam, north of Pretoria, on Wednesday afternoon, Tshwane emergency services said. Spokesperson Johan Pieterse said one passenger suffered a serious leg laceration and was taken to hospital. However, there were conflicting reports on the number of injured.

A third person wanted in connection with a kidnapping case for which paroled former bouncer Gary Beuthin and his girlfriend were arrested, handed himself over to police on Thursday morning. Superintendent Eugene Opperman said the three were expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

Former bouncer Gary Beuthin was arrested in Rivonia road in Sandton on Tuesday morning, police said. Spokesperson Superintendent Eugene Opperman said Beuthin was wanted for attempted murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, illegal pointing of a firearm and possession of a firearm.

Five men were arrested on Sunday in connection with the murder of reggae star Lucky Dube, East Rand police said. Police arrested the five, aged between 31 and 35, in Spruitview on the East Rand on Sunday morning. With just a day left to the Rugby World Cup final, a man has been fined in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court for trading in counterfeit Springbok jerseys, Gauteng police said on Friday. The owner of a shop at Value Mall in Boksburg was arrested on Thursday for being in possession of and trading in counterfeit Springbok jerseys.
Police have rejected as a hoax an email detailing how women are raped in mall toilets, Superintendent Eugene Opperman said on Tuesday. He said the email claims that women are being raped and robbed of their valuables and clothing while in mall restrooms in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
