State-owned utility Eskom is to review its plan to raise tariffs on power in light of the global financial turmoil.
Eskom has no power cuts planned, the power utility said on Monday. However, demand and supply remained tight and any technical difficulties could result in emergency cuts, said spokesperson Fani Zulu. ”One you have technical problems, they quickly take you to load-shedding,” he said.
Eskom warned on Thursday that it might be forced to resume load shedding as its electricity grid was under renewed pressure. Eskom has struggled to meet demand for electricity in Africa’s biggest economy, resulting in power failures which forced key mines to halt production for five days in January.

Eskom officials breathed a sigh of relief on Monday after making it through the weekend, and South Africa’s crucial rugby victory against Argentina, without any power cuts. ”We all got to enjoy a good game of rugby,” said spokesperson Fani Zulu. He said there may have been small localised interruptions due to technical problems caused by storms and heavy rain.

The three venues for the Twenty20 World Championship — Wanderers, Kingsmead and Newlands — have all decided to use generators as the preferred source of energy to light the games. And this has raised questions about Eskom’s and local municipalities’ ability to handle the much bigger event, the Soccer World Cup, in about 1 000 days.
