Mpofu rejects Cabinet plot against him

South African Broadcasting Corporation CEO Dali Mpofu on Sunday rejected the ”insinuations” that there was a Cabinet plot against him. This followed newspaper reports that he accused Thabo Mbeki’s Cabinet of plotting to oust him. Mpofu told Parliament he had received information that someone ”from high up” had given instructions that he be fired.

Abbey Makoe resigns from SABC

Abbey Makoe, political editor at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), has resigned from the public broadcaster, it said on Friday. Makoe said: ”I am very sad to leave the SABC. Of all the media institutions for which I have worked, I found the SABC the most transformed and progressive.”

SABC employees threatened

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) said on Sunday it regarded reported threats against senior political reporters as serious. Sunday newspapers reported that the SABC’s Miranda Strydom and Sophie Mokoena were ”lined up for slaughtering by unknown people”.

SABC defends Mbeki interview

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) on Friday rejected allegations that it was favouring President Thabo Mbeki over his rival, African National Congress deputy president Jacob Zuma, in the battle for succession in the ruling party. The SABC has come under fire from commentators following its decision to broadcast a two-hour interview with Mbeki.

SABC gets sole rights to Polokwane conference

The South African Broadcasting Corporation has been awarded exclusive rights to provide the feed at the African National Congress conference in Polokwane in December to all other broadcasters. Five SABC cameras would be allowed in the plenary hall during open sessions and would be providing ”clean feeds” and unedited material.

Sanef, SABC meet to discuss impasse

Delegations from the South African National Editors’ Forum (Sanef) and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) met in Johannesburg on Monday. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the contents of a letter SABC group CEO Dali Mpofu sent to Sanef on August 31, announcing that the broadcaster had broken ties with the editors’ forum.

SA artists vent fury over airplay payola

Some of South Africa’s most famous artists, including singer Johnny Clegg, have accused the country’s public broadcaster of demanding bribes if they want to be heard on air. ”It’s a very crazy situation … that we local musicians have to pay to get airplay on radio stations,” said Clegg, who is nicknamed the White Zulu.

Sanco backs SABC withdrawal from Sanef

The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) on Monday commended the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) for its ”brave and patriotic decision” to break ties with the South African National Editors’ Forum (Sanef). The SABC broke ranks with the forum in protest over its stance on Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang.
