The Diamond Eagles defeated the Warriors by 91 runs in their MTN domestic championship cricket match played at the De Beers Diamond Oval, Kimberley, on Friday. They also earned themselves a valuable bonus point. The Warriors were 38 without loss in the 13th over before veteran bowler Roger Telemachus struck.

Controversial businessman Charles Modise was denied bail in the Kimberly Magistrate’s Court on Friday. Modise is being investigated by the Scorpions and faces various charges, including fraud, forgery and corruption in the Northern Cape. Magistrate Andre Williams postponed the matter to July 9 for further investigations.

The Sol Plaatje municipality has urged Kimberley motorists to avoid the road running next to one of its biggest tourism attractions, the Big Hole, for fears of a cave-in. The tourist attraction was dug by thousands of diamond prospectors by hand, starting in 1871 and ending in 1914.

The tripartite alliance will not survive if Thabo Mbeki is re-elected president of the African National Congress in December, Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi said on Sunday. ”A status quo will see the destruction of the alliance itself,” he told what was in essence a Jacob Zuma election rally in Kimberley.

The nine South African soldiers killed during a military training exercise at Lohatla base were on Wednesday hailed as heroes and heroines during a memorial service in Kimberley. Defence Minister Mosiuoa Lekota said that the five men and four women had fallen in defence of South Africa’s hard-won democracy.

The exodus of police officers out of the Northern Cape must be addressed, the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) in the province said on Wednesday. Popcru provincial secretary Glisson Itebogeng said union members had expressed their dismay and concern over the ”massive transfer of members” who leave the province after being employed or promoted.

Leading 14-3 at halftime, the Free State Cheetahs made heavy weather of retaining their unbeaten record when defeating Griquas 21-17 in an error-riddled Absa Currie Cup match played in warm, conditions at Absa Park, Kimberley, on Saturday afternoon.
Leading 22-15 at half-time, Western Province, in spite of trailing 25-22 for all of 22 minutes during the second half, squeezed home 30-25 in a closely fought Currie Cup fixture played in Kimberley on Saturday. Scoring their match-winning and bonus-point-earning fourth try with 10 minutes remaining, Province returned home with a full-house five points.
The South African government will look more closely at crimes against women, President Thabo Mbeki told a national Women’s Day event in the Northern Cape on Thursday. Mbeki said the government and the Presidential Women’s Working Group had agreed to look at the issue in a ”more detailed and specific fashion”.

Thirty-eight homeless people are destitute after a fire destroyed the Salvation Army’s Goodwill House in Kimberley, a home spokesperson said on Wednesday. Salvation Army Captain Desiree Schrickker said the fire ravaged the house on Tuesday afternoon after a new homeless occupant tried to make a fire in the fire-place in the building.

Laboratory tests on water samples in various sections of the Vaal River have revealed traces of cholera, the Northern Cape health department said on Tuesday. A departmental spokesperson said the traces were found "specifically at Barkly West, Spitskop, Schmidtsdrift, the Vaalharts weir in Warrenton and the Vaalharts canal system".
The regional land claims commission and the body representing the Pniel estate land claimants in the Northern Cape had not reached agreement over their differences on Tuesday afternoon, legal counsel said. Legal counsel for the Pniel community property association Adrian Horwitz said the parties were still engaged in an attempt to reach a settlement.
The first farmland-expropriation exercise by the government, to be effective on March 15, was overshadowed by ”outstanding issues” among claimants of the Pniel farm in the Northern Cape. The land will now first be kept in curatorship by the state before it will be handed to the claimants, the Commission on Restitution of Land Rights said on Saturday.
The South African government was set on Saturday to take possession of the first farm to be expropriated in a move designed to silence criticism that it is dragging its feet over land reform. The building of a modern hospital in De Aar has been put on hold due to the preparation costs of the 2010 Soccer World Cup, the Northern Cape health department said on Thursday. Spokesperson Shelley Fielding confirmed there is a 12-month delay in the building of a R200-million hospital in De Aar due to a cutback in money available from the National Treasury.

The Cheetahs completely outclassed a poor Samoan side 74-19 in a Super 14 warm-up match played in Kimberley on Saturday. The Cheetahs raced into a 22-0 lead by the 30th minute and never released the pressure as the embattled Samoan side faced a team at the top of their game.
Off-field drama overshadowed the action on the field as the match between the touring Pakistanis and the Rest of South Africa ended in a tame draw at the De Beers Diamond Oval on Monday. Injured fast-bowler Umar Gul would be assessed on Wednesday after suffering an ankle injury that restricted him to three overs in the Rest’s innings.
The Rest of South Africa team were 220/4 scored off 68 overs in reply to Pakistan’s formidable first-innings total of 485/9 declared at stumps at the De Beers Diamond Oval, Kimberley, on Sunday.
