Wilkinson makes England return

BA strike called off after last-minute deal

A threatened two-day strike at British Airways (BA) this week was called off Monday after the airline hammered out a last-minute deal with unions. But the accord with cabin-crew unions will come too late to prevent some disruption to flights at London’s Heathrow and Gatwick airports on Wednesday and Thursday, the airline added.

Late strike keeps Arsenal in FA Cup

Kolo Toure maintained Arsenal’s hopes of winning the FA Cup by heading home a late equaliser against Premiership rivals Bolton to secure a 1-1 draw on Sunday. Bolton, Arsenal’s bogey team, had gone ahead in this fourth-round tie after a goalless first-half through Kevin Nolan’s 50th minute shot, which capped a well-worked move from the visitors at the Emirates Stadium.

Good day for top teams in FA Cup

Wayne Rooney scored twice for Manchester United to beat Portsmouth 2-1 as Premier League clubs had a good day in the fourth round of England’s FA Cup on Saturday. Rooney scored from a low cross from Ryan Giggs in the 77th minute before hitting a long-range chip into the top left corner of the goal six minutes later.

Grave undertaking for English football club

Dedicated fans of English football club Plymouth Argyle can now literally die for their team after being given the opportunity to be buried in a coffin painted in the club’s green-and-white colours. A local undertaker is offering followers of the second-tier Championship team a new service where they can choose their own Argyle-themed funeral.

Andriy Shevchenko and Frank Lampard each scored twice as Chelsea routed Wycombe 4-0 for a place in the final of the English League Cup on Tuesday. A British government committee criticised the spiraling costs of the London 2012 Olympics and called for greater transparency from organisers on finances to ensure continued public support. Cellphones banned at British Open

Spectators will be banned from taking cellphones to this year’s British Open at Carnoustie after complaints from players during the 2006 championship at Hoylake. ”We have so far resisted the call to ban mobile phones on the grounds that it may be an inconvenience to the public,” said director David Hill.

Global digital music sales skyrocket

Global digital music sales almost doubled in 2006 to about -billion, or 10% of all sales, but have not yet reached the industry’s ”holy grail” of offsetting the fall in CD sales, a trade organisation said. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry expects digital sales to account for a quarter of all sales worldwide by 2010.

PM calls for more US arms for Iraqi army

The United States could dramatically and quickly cut its troop presence in Iraq if it provided enough weapons to the country’s security forces, Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has said. Maliki called for greater US support for Iraqi troops in an interview with a group of foreign correspondents in Baghdad. Several newspapers reported his comments on Thursday.

Zim accused of trade in conflict diamonds

The diamond industry-backed Kimberley Process is investigating a complaint that Zimbabwe is exporting rough diamonds without proper certification. Chairperson of the Antwerp-based World Diamond Council, Eli Izhakoff, said on Wednesday the council had expressed concern that rough diamonds from Zimbabwe were being smuggled into South Africa.

Television bosses launched an investigation on Tuesday after a newsreader flashed her tummy and exchanged risqué banter with a colleague, not realising she was live on air. Emma Baker of Anglia Television, which broadcasts to viewers in eastern England, also fiddled with her bra and apparently addressed a co-worker as "Mrs Shameless".

James Bond will take on Her Majesty at the British film awards, with Casino Royale garnering nine Bafta nominations on Friday, just one behind frontrunner The Queen.
