Mazisi Kunene

From critiques of apartheid to reflections on post-colonial identity, Southern African literature has chronicled the region’s history and shaped its trajectory to a just society

When we rebel and part ways with the barbarism of the apartheid and the democratic state, we will keep the memory of this historic event alive for current and future generations

Mazisi Kunene’s classic poem about the warrior king has been reconstructed in its original tongue

The late poet laureate’s work, little known in South Africa, includes anecdotes, love notes and 11 000 poems.
