SA beat Pakistan to level the series

Brilliant half-centuries from Graeme Smith and Shaun Pollock helped South Africa win the fourth one-day international against Pakistan by seven wickets on Friday to level the five-match series 2-2. Pakistan’s total of 230-9 had looked respectable, but Smith (81) and Pollock (90) added 159 runs for the second-wicket stand to help their team reach 233-3 in 37.4 overs.

Fire sparks Pakistan wedding tragedy

A fire broke out in a tent at a wedding party in eastern Pakistan, triggering a stampede and wall collapse that killed 27 women and children, police said on Sunday. More than 30 other people were injured when the wedding party turned into a tragedy late on Saturday night in Jhok Utra.

Samuels hits form to help Windies to victory

Marlon Samuels hit his first century in four years to help the West Indies beat Pakistan by seven wickets in the fourth one-day international on Wednesday. The 25-year-old Jamaican was unbeaten on 100 to help his team recover from an early wobble and added 141 runs for the third wicket with Shivnarine Chanderpaul (60) as the tourists achieved the target with 15.1 overs to spare.

Windies plan major security for World Cup

The organisers of next year’s Cricket World Cup are taking every possible step to ensure security during the event in the Caribbean, a top official said on Tuesday. Foreign experts have been called in to advise on the security plans for the championship, which begins in March, chairperson of the World Cup 2007 organising board Ken Gordon told the media.

Yousuf shines as Pakistan salvage draw

Pakistan’s Mohammad Yousuf missed a double century by nine runs as the second Test against the West Indies ended in a high-scoring draw on Thursday’s final day. Yousuf made 191, his seventh hundred of the year, putting on 152 runs for the sixth wicket with Abdul Razzaq, who was out for 80, as Pakistan reached 461-7 before play was called off after tea.

Pakistan launch fightback against Windies

Half centuries from Imran Farhat, Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf inspired a strong fightback by Pakistan to save the second Test after Brian Lara had hit his ninth double hundred to put West Indies in control on Wednesday. Farhat (70 not out) shared substantial partnerships with Younis (56) and Yousuf (56 not out) to steer Pakistan to a comfortable 213-2 at the close.

Gayle, Ganga put Windies in command

Chris Gayle and Daren Ganga forged an undefeated opening stand of 151 for the West Indies to cap a miserable day for Pakistan on day two of the second Test on Monday. Gayle (87) and Ganga (59) posted the first century opening stand for the West Indies in 20 Tests in Pakistan after the home side were bowled out for 357 with paceman Jerome Taylor taking 5-91.

Terror ruled out in Pakistan plane crash

Pakistani officials on Tuesday ruled out the possibility of a terror attack in an airliner crash that killed 45 people, as they sent the plane’s ”black box” for analysis. The ageing Pakistani International Airlines Fokker F27 plummeted to the ground and burst into flames shortly after take-off from the central city of Multan on Monday.

Plane crashes in central Pakistan, 45 dead

A Pakistan International Airlines’ Fokker passenger plane crashed on Monday killing all 45 people on board, the police chief in the central city of Multan said. ”Everyone is dead. I am standing at the site,” said police chief Iftikhar Babar. Flight PK 688, en route for Lahore before flying on to Islamabad, crashed 10 minutes after take-off from Multan airport.

At least 31 people have died as a searing heatwave brought temperatures of nearly 47ºC to central Pakistan, officials said on Monday. The hot spell comes amid a warning from the country’s top meteorologist that Pakistan faces a possible drought with no significant rain expected in the next two months.

Rahul Dravid hit a patient half-century and paceman Rudra Pratap Singh grabbed four wickets as India trounced Pakistan by five wickets in the fourth one-day match on Thursday. Two blasts kill 39 people in Pakistan

Two bombs exploded at a gathering of Sunni Muslim radicals in the central Pakistan city of Multan before dawn on Thursday, killing at least 39 people and injuring about 100 others, officials said. Police immediately suspected a sectarian attack. The bombing comes less than a week after a suicide attack left 31 dead at a Shi’ite mosque in an eastern city.
