Charl Schwartzel heads to Humewood in Port Elizabeth for this week’s South African Airways (SAA) Open determined to claim the victory that eluded him last week and continue his quest for a place in next year’s United States Masters. The 22-year-old lost to Spain’s Alvaro Quiros on the final hole of last week’s Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek.

South Africa handed India a third straight heavy defeat by 80 runs at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday, and won the five-match one-day cricket series with a game to spare. Herschelle Gibbs’s undefeated 93 helped South Africa post 243 for eight, after which India crumbled all out for 163 in the 39th over.
The Eastern Province Rugby Union (EPRU) has agreed in principle to sell 25,1% of its shares to SA Rugby, a move that could effectively give the national body control over the floundering Southern Spears franchise. The decision to sell the shares was made at a meeting held at the EPRU Stadium on Tuesday night.
Netball has been plunged into crisis following the resignation of two members of Netball South Africa’s national executive and the national coach. All three resignations are with immediate effect. The resignations followed a meeting of the national council at which all 34 netball regions were represented.
Western Province got off to the best possible start at the Spar National Netball Championships in Port Elizabeth on Monday, beating defending champions Central Gauteng by 45 goals to 38 in their opening match. Central Gauteng certainly did not appear to be champion material in the first quarter.
Rescuers trying to save a woman who got stuck in a tree after her house was flooded were hampered by snakes making for their jet ski, the National Sea Rescue Institute said on Thursday. ”There were lots of snakes in the flood waters. They were using the rescue gear and the jetski for floatation,” spokesperson Craig Lambinon said.
The Southern Spears have applied to the high court to force SA Rugby to include the newly formed franchise in both this year’s Currie Cup and next year’s Super 14 competitions. They have literally thrown the ball into the SA Rugby court to show why the resolution adopted by the president’s council of the South African Rugby Union on June 8 last year should no longer be binding.
An uninspired Springboks outfit managed to scrape through to a 29-15 victory over Scotland to end up 2-0 in their two Test series played at the Eastern Province Rugby Union stadium in Port Elizabeth on Saturday. The home side offered little on the day as they came under some unrelenting pressure from a determined Scottish pack.
Despite suffering a double blow to their midfield, South Africa are favourites to wrap up the two Test series against Scotland in Port Elizabeth on Saturday. The Springboks beat the visitors 36-16 in the first Test in Durban last weekend. Rib injuries to midfield partners Jean de Villiers and Jaque Fourie means the Boks go into the game with a new centre pairing.
South Africa recalled fit-again winger Bryan Habana and Scotland made six changes to its run-on side for the second rugby Test on Saturday. South Africa won the first 36-16 last Saturday at Durban. Habana missed that match because of an ankle injury he aggravated in the Bulls’ Super 14 semifinal.
Springbok coach Jake White announced a new centre pairing to face Scotland in the second Test in Port Elizabeth on Saturday. Injuries to centres Jean de Villiers and Jaque Fourie forced White to select the untested combination of Olivier and Snyman.
Australia bounced back from their humiliating defeat on Friday night with a hard fought 24 run win in the third Standard Bank one-day international at St George’s Park on Sunday. South Africa were all out for 230 in the 48th over chasing 255 for victory.

The Warriors lost it on all fronts on Wednesday night as their hopes of staying in contention for the Standard Bank Pro20 cricket series disintegrated with an amateurish display against the Free State Eagles at Sahara Oval St George’s. Sending the visitors into bat, the Warriors bowled with ill discipline to concede 173 runs in 20 overs.

The asset forfeiture unit has been granted a provisional order to attach the home and pension of top Port Elizabeth police detective Derrick Norsworthy, who allegedly gambled away stolen police exhibit money. He was arrested for alleged theft and for gambling with loot he and other police officers had allegedly recovered from criminals.

Brilliant attacking batsmanship by the Titans brought them a superb six-wicket victory over the Warriors in their Standard Bank Cup limited-overs cricket match at St George’s Park on Friday. A handful of residents of Kleinskool in Port Elizabeth were still burning tyres in the streets by 9am on Tuesday morning, in protest over alleged poor service delivery, Eastern Cape police said. Inspector Johan van Greunen said 10 people from the area set the tyres alight early in the morning.

A 17m-long sperm whale that beached off Ngqura harbour in Algoa Bay, Eastern Cape, at the weekend, has died, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said on Monday. Earlier on Monday, Ian Gray, the NSRI’s spokesperson in Port Elizabeth, said the whale was expected to die ”within the next two hours”.

The Coega Development Corporation has secured its second investment — a R1,6-billion stainless steel precision mill that is part of the offset from the multibillion-rand arms deal, The Herald website reported on Wednesday. The project still needed the approval of its 26% partner, the Industrial Development Corporation, ”but no obstacles are expected”.

The Eastern Province (EP) Mighty Elephants gained a hard-earned 17-9 win over the Border Bulldogs in their Absa Currie Cup first-division rugby match played at the EP Rugby Union headquarters on Friday night after leading 14-0 at half-time. The match never really got off the ground, with both sides making many basic mistakes.
Former apartheid-era security police colonel Gideon Nieuwoudt died in Port Elizabeth on Friday after a battle with cancer, his lawyer Jan Wagener said. Wagener said Nieuwoudt, who was in his mid-fifties, had cancer of the lungs which had spread to other organs, and there had also been worrying tumours on his brain.
South African Rugby has suspended the executive committee of the Eastern Province Rugby Union with immediate effect. A South African Rugby Union (Saru) spokesperson said union representatives held a meeting with the Eastern Province executive committee on Monday night to discuss various problems.
