A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6,7 rocked eastern Papua New Guinea on Thursday, causing some damage and plunging parts of the coastal city of Lae into darkness, officials and witnesses said. The quake hit just before 6.48pm local time with the epicentre about 400km north of the capital, Port Moresby.
Police and health workers in Papua New Guinea launched an investigation on Tuesday into reports that people living with Aids in the rugged South Pacific nation were being buried alive by their relatives. Romanus Pakure, deputy director of the government’s National Aids Council, said the allegations were ”a wake-up call”.
A moderate earthquake toppled several houses on Sunday in the Solomon Islands near where a quake and tsunami killed 52 people early this month, an official said. The United States Geological Survey reported that a magnitude-5,4 quake struck mid-afternoon local time 40km south-east of the region’s main town of Gizo.

A bid by a South African joint venture to acquire a 51% stake in telecommunications group Telikom PNG has been rejected by the Papua New Guinea government, it was announced on Wednesday. Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare said the national executive council had decided not to proceed with the partial sale of Telikom and that the government would re-examine its options next year
