New Tanzanian Cabinet faces vast challenges

A new, leaner Cabinet for Tanzania was sworn in Wednesday, its predecessor having fallen apart last week amid a corruption scandal. President Jakaya Kikwete dissolved his last Cabinet on February 7 after Edward Lowassa stepped down as prime minister. He and other lawmakers were implicated in a $179-million corruption scandal.

Tanzania PM tenders resignation

Tanzania Prime Minister Edward Lowassa told Parliament Thursday he had tendered his resignation to the president after being implicated in a corruption scandal over an energy deal. "Because I have been linked to this scandal, I have decided to write to the president asking to be relieved of my duties," the premier told lawmakers.

US football star guilty of dog fighting

United States football star Michael Vick pleaded guilty and publicly apologised on Monday for his role in a dog-fighting case that will land him in jail and already has prompted his suspension from the sport. Standing ramrod straight, Vick said ”guilty” when asked by US District Judge Henry Hudson how he would plead.

No takers yet for R2,2bn Indiana lottery prize

No one had come forward by Monday morning to claim the only winning ticket for a ,3-million (R2,25-billion) lottery jackpot sold near the Indiana-Ohio state line, lottery officials said. ”We don’t how many people — if it’s one person, or a hundred people — is the winner,” said Mark Sirkin, a spokesperson for the Hoosier Lottery.
