Rupert (89) died in his sleep at his home in Stellenbosch at 11pm last Wednesday and was and was buried next to his wife, Huberte, on Tuesday.

At least 12 crocodiles have starved to death on a farm in Serui, Zimbabwe, while another 258 are close to dying, that country’s Herald newspaper reported on Wednesday. It said that some of the four-year-old crocodiles, which were kept in four dry ponds, showed signs of serious skin damage because of extended exposure to the sun.

The United States space agency Nasa may choose the Northern Cape as a site for an array of telescopes and antennae that communicate with spacecraft. The unemployment rate among black South Africans had dropped over the past four years but blacks still lagged far behind whites in the employment stakes, Stats SA’s labour force survey has found. The unemployment rate for black men had dropped from 31,5% in September 2001 to 26,6% last September, according to the survey, released in Pretoria on Tuesday.

A tremor of a magnitude of 3,6 on the Richter scale was recorded in the East Rand, 8km north-west of Germiston, on Tuesday at 11.13am, said Ian Saunders, project leader for the South African National Seismograph Network at the Council for Geoscience in Pretoria.
