Farmers in need wait for fuel

A massive effort is under way to provide fuel to the two sectors most in need — the deciduous fruit farmers in the Western Cape and the summer rainfall farmers of Gauteng, Mpumalanga, the Free State and North West — the South African Petroleum Industry Association (Sapia) said on Monday.

Goosen beats Els by one stroke

Retief Goosen made a crucial birdie putt on the 18th hole to win the South African Airways Open by one stroke from Ernie Els at The Links, Fancourt, on Sunday. Goosen posted a 70 for a 72-hole aggregate of 282, 10-under-par, while Els fired a five-under-par 68 for a 283 at nine under.

Cobras remain bottom of the log

The Warriors piled on the agony for the Cape Cobras as they won their Standard Bank Cup match at Paarl on Sunday. A good comeback by the Cobras almost swung the match back in their favour, but by the end the home side remained rock bottom on the log, still seeking a victory after seven matches.

Khutsong residents to hold public meeting

Residents of Khutsong will hold a meeting on Monday following the lifting of a ban by police on public gatherings in the area. Violence erupted again in the troubled township, near Carletonville, last week when residents protested against the National Council of Provinces’ approval of legislation to do away with cross-boundary municipalities.

Man mauled to death by tigers at zoo in Bloem

A man was found mauled to death in the tigers’ enclosure at the Bloemfontein zoo on Sunday, said police. Captain Elsa Gerber said an adult visitor to the zoo raised the alarm when he saw a body lying in the enclosure of two tigers at noon. ”We don’t know who he is, how he got there, where he’s from or anything else,” she said.

SA working on hydrocarbon emission standards

South Africa’s Environmental Affairs and Tourism Minister Marthinus Van Schalkwyk acknowledged on Monday that current legislation did not prescribe ambient air quality standards relating to emissions from bulk fuel storage facilities. Recognising the limits of the existing legislation, his department was "in the process of promulgating standards for benzene and other hydrocarbons".

Hundreds displaced after Cape township fire

A fire destroyed more than 100 shacks and displaced hundreds of people in the Kosovo informal settlement in Phillippi outside of Cape Town on Saturday afternoon, Cape Town emergency services said. A control room operator said that fire fighters had controlled the blaze and were in the process of putting out the flames.

Many holiday drivers ‘travelling drunk’

While traffic volumes along major routes to holiday destinations declined by Saturday night, Arrive Alive said they were experiencing alcohol related problems on the roads. ”People are indulging in alcohol and many of them are travelling drunk long distances,” said Arrive Alive spokesperson Ntau Letebele.

SA schoolboy one short of a tonne

Dean Elgar of Free State was unfortunate to just miss a well-deserved century by one run when he scored 99 against Border at Fort Hare University, Alice, on Saturday on the second day of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week. Elgar made his runs off 154 balls with eight fours and Free State totalled 192-6 in their 50 overs.

Cycling for recycling in Johannesburg

Charles Mbiza’s bicycle is more than a method of transport. It’s a metaphor for the state of rubbish collection in South Africa’s commercial hub, Johannesburg. The bike — actually more of a large tricycle — is one of several that were introduced to collect waste such as used paper cups during the World Summit on Sustainable Development, held three years ago in Johannesburg.

SAA diverts London flight to Milan

South African Airways will divert one of its two daily London to Johannesburg flights to Milan for refuelling as a result of the fuel shortage at London’s Heathrow airport. The fuel shortage follows the explosion and subsequent fire at a fuel depot north of London on Sunday.

Compass Group lands Kruger restaurant deal

South African National Parks (SANParks) has appointed the Compass Group as an interim service provider for all restaurants in the Kruger National Park. The appointment is for a one-year period, with effect from December 15. This follows SANParks’s successful application back in November for the liquidation of Vilayet.
