Call to prosecute all implicated in grant fraud

The 21 000 civil servants caught fraudulently claiming social grants should all be prosecuted, face disciplinary hearings and be made to pay back the money, two rights monitoring groups said on Wednesday. ”It is vital that justice in these cases be seen to be done,” the Grahamstown offices of the Black Sash and the Public Service Accountability Monitor said in a joint statement.

Zim union to march against poverty

Zimbabwe’s biggest labour movement, the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions, will be organising countrywide processions on September 13 to demand an end to poverty. ”Eighty percent of Zimbabweans are living in poverty because workers’ ‘take home’ salaries cannot even take them home,” the union said in a statement late on Tuesday.

Institute says red tape hampers economic growth

Labour regulations and official red tape tops a list of key constraints hampering South Africa’s economic growth, a Bureau for Economic Research survey showed on Wednesday. Other constraints identified are state leadership and capacity (policy support and municipal services), infrastructure deficiencies and costs and labour skills.

Police fire on residents blocking highway

Police fired rubber bullets and stun grenades at residents barricading part of the Golden Highway near Orange Farm during a protest over municipal services on Wednesday morning. ”It seems that they [the residents] are upset with the municipality over water and electricity services,” said Superintendent Nthabiseng Mazibuko.

Scientists call for Manto’s dismissal

More than 60 HIV scientists, including a Nobel Peace Prize winner and leading academics, have called for the immediate removal of Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, the Treatment Action Campaign said on Wednesday. In a letter to President Thabo Mbeki, a total of 81 signatories said the minister’s health policies were ineffective and immoral.

Police unveil new system to speed up forensic analysis

The police unveiled a R75-million robotics system at a brand new forensic-science laboratory in Pretoria on Tuesday, the South African Broadcasting Corporation reported. The police have been strongly criticised recently for the delays in forensic analysis for court cases and the police commissioner in charge of the forensic unit, Piet du Toit, said the new facilities will soon reduce this.

Car hijackings on the rise, says DA

Insurance industry figures show car hijackings in South Africa have hit new highs, says the Democratic Alliance. ”Insurance firms and tracking companies have indicated car hijackings have increased from 12 434 in 2004/05 to over 15 864 so far this year — exceeding highs last recorded in 2001/02,” DA safety and security deputy spokesperson Ryno King said in a statement on Tuesday.

The right to peaceful protest and demonstration is widely suppressed in South Africa, a report by the Freedom of Expression Institute (FXI) said on Tuesday. ”There is a widespread violation of the right to demonstrate in South Africa. Demonstrators are denied their constitutional rights to freedom of expression and assembly,” the FXI said.

Russia to work with SA on UN Security Council

South Africa is to take up a two-year, non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council from January 1 next year, President Thabo Mbeki said on Tuesday. About 1 000 Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) shop stewards gathered outside the United States embassy in Pretoria on Tuesday to demand that the country stop supporting Israel. Although peaceful, the crowd vocally objected when US representatives refused to receive their memorandum outside the embassy compound.

Provincial chair of Zuma trust shot dead

The provincial chairperson of the Friends of Jacob Zuma Trust was shot outside his Meadowlands home on Monday and died on Tuesday, the head of communications for the trust, Kaizer Mohau, said. ”Seven bullets were pumped into Zodathi Sithole’s body,” said Mohau. ”He died in hospital this [Tuesday] morning.”

The African National Congress (ANC) on Tuesday rejected as false media reports that its deputy president Jacob Zuma was ”gagged” from addressing the recent national congress of the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union. ”The ANC does not understand why some sections of the media … should continue to publish reports that are wholly false,” said ANC spokesperson Smuts Ngonyama.

Jazz star Moses Khumalo found dead

One of South Africa’s foremost young jazz musicians, saxophonist Moses Khumalo (27), was found dead in his house in Honeydew, west of Johannesburg, on Monday evening, West Rand police said. Khumalo’s girlfriend, who last saw the musician on Friday, went to check on him and found his body hanging in the house, police said.

Legal Aid Board runs R19m deficit

South Africa’s Legal Aid Board ran a deficit of R19,2-million for the 2005/06 financial year, according to its annual report tabled at Parliament. The report tabled on Tuesday shows that a government grant amounted to R453,2-million, of which expenses amounted to R485,3-million, including R252,1-million in personnel costs.

SA pupils injured in bus smash in Argentina

All possible assistance was being given to six South African exchange pupils injured in an Argentinian bus crash, the Department of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday. The South African ambassador to Argentina, Piet Goosen, had been in touch with the injured after the accident in which 10 people died and 20 were injured.
