Health-summit delegates attacked in Pretoria

Four armed men robbed three foreigners on their way to a World Health Summit on the R21, Pretoria police said on Monday. Inspector Paul Ramaloko said the three delegates, two men and a woman from France, Germany and Nigeria, were on their way to Pretoria north to attend the summit on Sunday when a Hyundai bumped their Microbus from behind.

Mlambo-Ngcuka: DA should apologise to first lady

Democratic Alliance chief whip Douglas Gibson should apologise for invading First Lady Zanele Mbeki’s privacy, said Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka on Monday. Mlambo-Ngcuka called Gibson’s behaviour ”an invasion of Mrs Mbeki’s privacy and injurious to her dignity as a citizen”, said her spokesperson Thabang Chiloane in a statement.

A countrywide Shoprite Checkers strike on Monday continued into its 48th day with no settlement to the workers’ disputes in sight, the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers’ Union (Saccawu) said. ”There’s nothing much happening at the moment,” Michael Pau, Saccawu’s national chairperson, said.

Mixed reaction to new textile quotas

An agreement to limit Chinese clothing and textile imports has brought mixed reaction, with labour in the textile industry welcoming the opportunity to rebuild the industry and the Democratic Alliance saying it will bring price increases. The China-South African agreement follows more than a year’s negotiations. It sets quantitative targets on specified clothing and textile products.

Morobe appointed as new Kagiso Media CEO

The president’s head of communications, Murphy Morobe, will leave his post at the end of the month to become the CEO of Kagiso Media, the company announced on Monday. The African National Congress is not investigating claims by Jacob Zuma that there is a conspiracy against him, the ANC said on Monday. Speaking at a press conference to brief the media on a planned vigil to be held outside the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Monday night, KwaZulu-Natal ANC secretary general Senzo Mchunu said he was not ”aware” of any investigation.

August sees record car sales in SA

August saw the most new cars ever sold in one month in South Africa, the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers said on Monday. ”Assisted by strong consumer demand and purchases by the car rental industry, new car sales were nothing short of spectacular,” the organisation said of the 39 215 units sold.

Survey shows more children attending school

More children are attending and finishing school but more are vulnerable due to poverty and the death of at least one parent, said an Education Department report released on Monday. The report found that the demand for high school and higher education institutions would probably grow strongly while demand for primary schools would grow more slowly.

Child flung from car in horror crash

At least one person died and a child was injured when he was flung from a vehicle in an accident on the N1 in Johannesburg on Saturday night, said Johannesburg emergency services. A car travelling north on the N1 was coming up to the 14th Avenue offramp in Quellerina when it was apparently rear-ended by a BMW.
