As if the idea of having one robot to serve a person wasn’t unusual enough, Honda says its robots are now ready to work in pairs — and they can even serve drinks. At a demonstration held on Tuesday in Tokyo, the automaker showed off two of the child-sized Asimo robots serving tea and performing other tasks.

At least 51 people drowned off the Turkish coast in one of three incidents that left at least 90 other hopeful migrants to Europe missing or presumed dead, officials said on Monday. As many as 85 people may have been aboard a 15m boat that capsized on Saturday in the Aegean Sea off the western Turkish town of Seferihisar, near Izmir.

A fake government office has been discovered in northern India that collected taxes, provided civic services and even handed out birth and death certificates, a report said on Monday. An office was set up outside Jhansi town in Uttar Pradesh state and 20 people employed to carry out jobs such as street sweeping.

Authorities in Kyrgyzstan have launched a contest to track down Father Christmas somewhere inside the mountainous Central Asian state — a week after Swedish experts reported that he must be there. The contest runs until December 20, but the hunt could prove tough because of the former Soviet republic’s imposing mountain ranges.

South Africa’s Department of Minerals and Energy has converted Harmony Gold Mining’s old-order mining rights into new-order mining rights, Harmony said on Monday. Harmony has been granted 13 new-order mining rights covering all its South African gold-mining operations including its Evander, Doornkop and Randfontein operations.

China’s largest steel company BaoSteel called on Friday on the Australian government to intervene to prevent BHP Billiton from taking over rival miner Rio Tinto.
