Empowerment fund to create 1 500 jobs

About 1 500 jobs will be created and 4 500 supported in the next year through the National Empowerment Fund — which identifies and supports black businesses — its chairperson said on Wednesday. Presenting the fund’s third annual report to Parliament on Wednesday, chairperson Ronnie Ntuli said: ”Three thousand five hundred applications [for funding] were processed during the year.”

Kenyan women look to the sun for cooking

The women in Kajiado were sceptical — unwilling to believe that cardboard containers lined with aluminium foil on the inside would cook food when placed in the sun. But, their minds were changed during a recent demonstration of the unassuming containers. These solar cookers were loaded with several pots filled with meat, rice, eggs and other kinds of food — the pots black in colour to absorb heat, and covered in plastic bags to retain warmth.

Mbeki congratulates Brazil president on re-election

President Thabo Mbeki on Tuesday joined other world leaders in congratulating Brazil’s President Lula da Silva on his re-election. ”I have the honour to convey on behalf of the government and people of the Republic of South Africa, sincere congratulations on your re-election as president of the Federative Republic of Brazil,” Mbeki said in a message to Da Silva.

Official: Al-Qaeda frequented bombed Pakistan madrasa

A religious school targeted in Pakistan air strikes was frequented by top al-Qaeda militants, including Ayman al-Zawahiri and the alleged mastermind of the foiled London airlines attack, a senior security official said on Tuesday. Neither al-Zawahiri — Osama bin Laden’s Egyptian deputy — nor Abu Obaida al-Misri were in the school, or madrasa, at the time of the raid on Monday, the official said.
