A PLAN to sue the government over drugs that can prevent HIV transmission from mother to child will be announced by the HIV/Aids lobby group Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) on Tuesday. TAC last year threatened to sue over the government’s refusal to make the anti-retroviral Nevirapine available in state facilities, but withdrew when the Department of Health announced that Nevirapine pilot sites were to be set up in each province. However TAC representative Anneke Meerkotter said on Monday it had become clear the sites were inadequate. The government had not come up with a plan to provide mother-to-child prevention to all women who needed it. Nevirapine has been shown to dramatically reduce transmission during birth, and supporters of its use argue that the expense of the one-off treatment is justified by the savings on treatment of HIV-infected children. UNAids in October last year recommended using the drug. – Sapa
