Denel drops Independent interdict, keeps gag on M&G

TUESDAY, 5.00PM

PARASTATAL arms manufacturer Denel on Tuesday declined to proceed with a court interdict prohibiting the Sunday Independent from naming a Middle Eastern country with which Denel is negotiating a multimillion-rand arms sale. The newspaper at the weekend defied the interdict and named the country in the public interest.

The temporary order issued 10 days ago by the Pretoria High Court was discharged on Tuesday after Denel declined to apply to have it made permanent.

The Mail & Guardian is constrained by a similar temporary interdict with a return date on August 18. Denel’s attorney said Tuesday’s discharge of the temporary court order against the Sunday Independent does not apply to the order against the Mail & Guardian.
