‘Bok is mine’ – Luyt

OWN CORRESPONDENT, Cape Town | Wednesday 9.30AM.

OUSTED South African Rugby Football Union president Louis Luyt on Tuesday proclaimed himself as owner of the Springbok emblem, adding that he holds no allegiance to the National Sports Congress.

In a characteristically blunt and outspoken address to an extraordinary general meeting of the Sarfu executive, Luyt warned rugby administrators against bowing to pressure. His appeals fell on deaf ears, however, as the executive ruled that the Sarfu constitution will be amended so that in future no Sarfu president can simultaneously serve as a provincial union president and that no president can serve more than two consecutive terms.

The pugnacious Luyt, sometimes shouting, insisted Sarfu owes no allegiance to the NSC and that he owns the Springbok emblem. Said Luyt: “We [Sarfu] do not have to belong to them [NSC]. They cannot dictate to us. The Springbok emblem does not belong to the NSC or Sarfu. It was designed by me, it belongs to me.”
