SOUTH Africa’s Amanda Coetzer moved into the third round of the US Open tennis tournament on Thursday beating Romanian Raluca Sandu comfortably 6-0 6-2.
The 13th South African seed will meet vastly improved Barbara Schett of Austria, who beat Coetzer in their last meeting in Boston last month, en route to a fourth round clash with second seed Lindsay Davenport.
The win will hopefully spur Coetzer on as she has struggled with her form since May after splitting with coach Gavin Hopper, losing in the first round of the French Open and the second round at Wimbledon.
In a first round doubles match, KwaZulu Natal’s Chris Haggard and American Jack Waite came through a close first set to beat Macedonian Aleksander Kitinov and South African Paul Rosner 7-6 (15-13) 6-4.
